The 40’s

The Feelings it Elicits:

  •         Austere
  •             Timeless
  •             Neat
  •             Understated sexy
  •             Masculine

Achieve this look for your shape:

Hourglass
Use this look to accentuate your tiny waist. A tweed suit with a jacket that cuts in at the waist paired with a pencil skirt will surely show off your figure. You may also look into dresses in a hounds tooth or tweed that mimic that nipped waist with a pencil bottom.

Take advantage of some of the textures that come to play in this look as well. Have fun with fur and lace. You may even choose to show off a bit of décolletage (tastefully of course)

Triangle
To achieve this look with a Triangle figure you may use a velvet blouse, or choose a blouse with the leg o’ mutton sleeve. For those who want to try a jacket be sure it has a strong shoulder, this can be achieved with a light shoulder pad. This will help create volume up top. Pair this with a straight skirt, to de - emphasize the lower half. Be sure to use darker colors below the waist.

For those who choose to play with lace or fur be sure to keep those textured and detailed fabrics up top. For the lower half choose a tweed, hounds tooth, or striped skirt in a darker color. This will create the illusion of a narrower lower half and a wider upper half.

V
A V who wants to achieve the 40’s look will want to visually narrow her upper half and create volume on the lower half. Try a jacket over a blouse perhaps with a bit of embellishment on the top of the blouse or blazer. The jacket should be worn open to create additional lines on top. For V’s who have a slight waist try a look that will nip in at the waist, and allow yourself to wear a pencil skirt. V’s who do not have much of a waist will not want to have the jacket nip in at the waist and will be better in a straight skirt.

For V’s who want to play with fabrics be sure to keep the lace and or fur off your upper half. Perhaps using it in an accessory is the best way to achieve this look. The V will want to keep the upper half rather straight in a darker color, while the lower half can be in a lighter fabric that flows away from the body creating the illusion of volume.

O
For an O going after the 40’s look you will want to a find blouse &/ jacket to wear that falls to the hip line. Thus, skipping the entire waist. You may choose a nice dark no textured or slightly textured jacket worn open over your sweater or blouse. Pair this with a straight skirt in a matching fabric. Be sure the skirt is knee length to show off your legs.

Choose to keep lace up top or at the very bottom (a hemming detail on either end of the body) fur might be used in a bolero or with accessories – Again fur will make the area it covers look bigger!!!

Rectangle
A rectangle who chooses to embrace the 40’s look will want to wear the tweed suit but avoid the cinched waist, instead keeping the lines very straight. This also is relevant for a rectangle in the 40’s style dress. Choose a dress that is rather straight and does not cinch at the waist.

The details like lace fur, etc may be used anywhere on the body as long as the user is comfortable with the idea of adding volume to that particular area.

Accessories

  • Choose Fur boleros
  • Lace details
  • Pearls
  • Lady Gloves
  • Two - toned heels
  • Leather grained handbags
  • 40’s inspired hats
  • Wool Coats

Emmys 2009 Red on the Red Carpet

Emmy Style 2009

Is it a coincidence that the red carpet season comes so soon after New York Fashion week? Perhaps it is however, one cant deny the fact that our favorite stars have the opportunity to view the newest fashions right before their very eyes prior to strutting their stuff on the red carpet. That being said the stars and stylists have an opportunity to take what they have seen at fashion week and translate it into their own style in time for the Emmys. This is a great cycle because now we as the general public have the opportunity to take what they have worn on the red carpet and put it into our closets. So, based on what we saw yesterday one thing that is definite is the fact that red prevailed as the colors of choice.

The following offers a few examples of gowns in red.

 Sigourney Weaver in David Meister
Jennifer Morrison in Calvin Klein
Hayden Panettiere in J Mendel

    Mila Kunis in Monique Lhuillier
 Toni Collette in Monique Lhuillier

As we can see red was all over the carpet. When integrating red into your fall wardrobe remember that red draws attention, and immediately stimulates people. For some of you that is great news so go for it, don it from head to toe. For those of you who do not want that much attention try wearing red in your accessories with a scarf, handbag, jewelry, etc. Another thing to pay attention to is what shade of red will work best for your coloring especially if it is worn close to your face. White After Labor Day?
I was recently asked to clear up the rules. Can we or can we not don white after Labor Day? Being that tomorrow is Labor Day I thought this might be the best time to approach the topic, as it is most definitely top of mind. The first thing to consider is from where does this rule stem? It stems from a rule regarding wearing white shoes on Easter Sunday and or between Memorial Day and Labor Day. This is a Southern Rule that was observed by “polite society” of the old south. Old-fashioned society however, does not say that they have a problem with white itself after Labor Day, as long it is not a shoe.
So, as a reader you might think this is 2009, has this developed into a rule of no white whatsoever, or is this rule a thing of the past? As an image consultant I would actually say it would be difficult to avoid white altogether. No one can deny the appeal of a crisp white button down paired with most anything during ALL seasons. A white linen suit however, would most likely be rather difficult to pull off throughout the colder months.
Although, I have my own opinions I figured I would do a bit of research to see where everyone else stood. The Today Show on NBC hosts an opinion poll online regarding this rule. The results? I answered, “Yes. This rule is outdated. I’ll wear any color I want!” Myself, and another 81% feel this way. So good to know majority rules!

Instead of focusing on white, as a member of polite society the first thing you might pack away for the colder months would be light flimsy clothing most suitable for the warmer months. E.g. linen does not work after Labor Day regardless of the color. Also put away any items constructed with straw, or sundresses, or sandals, etc. Maintain your white tops (not strapless, or halter), and white jeans etc. you can still pull these items off throughout the autumn and winter months. As for sweaters, wools and other items that are constructed for colder months, look for them in a winter white.

As always I hope this information proves valuable, however if you have questions do contact Trel at ww.lvstyleconsultant.com.
